Child's Well Visit, 3 Years: Care Instructions

Three-year-olds can have a range of feelings. They may be excited one minute and have a temper tantrum the next. Your child may be ready to ride a tricycle. And they can copy easy shapes, like circles and crosses. Your child probably likes to dress and eat without your help.

Read stories to your child every day. Hearing the same story over and over helps children learn to read.

Put locks or guards on windows. And be sure to watch your child near play equipment and stairs.

  • Give your child healthy snacks, such as whole-grain crackers or yogurt.

  • Give your child fruits and vegetables every day.

Keeping your child safe

  • Always use a car seat. Install it in the back seat.

  • Save the number for Poison Control (1-800-222-1222).

  • Make sure your child wears a helmet if they ride a bike or scooter.

  • Don't leave your child alone around water, including pools, hot tubs, and bathtubs.

  • Keep guns away from children. If you have guns, lock them up unloaded. Lock ammunition away from guns.

Potty training your child

  • Let your child decide when to potty train. They will use the potty when there is no reason to resist.

  • Praise them with smiles and hugs. You can also reward them with things like stickers or a trip to the park.

Follow-up care is a key part of your child's treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor if your child is having problems. It's also a good idea to know your child's test results and keep a list of the medicines your child takes.
